Welcome to Courtside

My name is Andy and more often than not I'm to be found courtside watching my son Elijah playing the sport he loves; tennis. It's this weekly pilgrimage, coffee in hand, which led me to create the Courtside Podcast.

Courtside is a series of conversations exploring the journey sport-parents go on as we support our children in the sport they love.

Through Courtside you’ll hear from Players, Parents, Coaches and experts in the fields of sports science and adolescent development in order that as Courtside Parents we can create a positive courtside environment, meaning that our children flourish through the culture we create around the sport that they love.

So, how's your courtside culture?

As a player, Russell Earnshaw played Premiership Rugby with West Hartlepool, Bath where he won the European Cup and Rotherham Titans. Internationally he played for England on the IRB Sevens circuit, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and was part of the squad that played in the IRB World Series tournaments in Chile and Argentina

As a coach, Russell has been assistant coach to the England 7's team and at the time of the interview, Russell was an assistant coach as part of the RFU's pathway program. Russell is now, along with many things Director at the Magic Academy

In this interview, from a hard tackling rugby player and coach you're going to hear comments endorsing:

  • The removal of competition from junior sport
  • An ethos of thinking longterm and simply loving our kids
  • Kids coaching their parents

This is a must listen to conversation which challenges us as parents to redefine winning and to promote inclusion. To Russell's frustration young people are being excluded and therefore leaving from the sport due to a mentality that winning is everything.

For us, we were left thinking; "what does loving our kids look like from the courtside?"
